The Mardi Himal Trek is a captivating, brief, and fulfilling journey located in the Annapurna trekking region of the Annapurna Conservation areas near Pokhara, the tourist hub of Nepal. The duration of the Mardi Himal Trek can range from 5 to 10 days, depending on the starting and ending points as well as the pace of the trek. This moderately challenging trek is ideal for beginners, seasoned trekkers, backpackers, and families with children. Situated at the base of the stunning Mt. Machhapurche pyramid, the Mardi Himal offers a new alternative trail to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, having opened in 2011. The trek provides an unparalleled view of the Annapurna ranges and vibrant flora and fauna, passing through dense forests of rhododendron, oak, pine, and shrub vegetation. Furthermore, the trek offers an opportunity to experience the local culture of the Gurung and Magar communities and their unique lifestyle. The journey begins with a short and scenic drive to Phedi from Pokhara, followed by treks to Dhampus village, Pothana, Deurali, forest camp, low camp, high camp, and base camp. Each location offers uniquely beautiful and unparalleled views. The base camp provides a 360-degree view of the mighty Himalayan peaks during sunrise and sunset, making it a must-see for adventure enthusiasts. After experiencing the culture and natural beauty of the trail, the trek concludes with a return to Pokhara and eventually Kathmandu. For a unique experience, it is recommended to join the trek in the spring season to enjoy the jungle adorned with colorful flowers and birds, while autumn is the best season for the Mardi Himal Trek.

This trail provides breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan range, diverse landscapes, and snowy glacial valleys. Additionally, it allows us to immerse ourselves in the rich cultures and traditions of the local villagers along the way. Unlike other well-established trekking trails, the Mardi Himal Track is relatively new and lacks extensive infrastructure and facilities. As a result, camping may be necessary at certain points along the trail. However, this also means that there are endless opportunities for new and unspoiled experiences. As you ascend to an elevation of 3,300m, you will be enchanted by the rhododendron forest, especially during the blooming season when the entire forest is covered in vibrant red rhododendron flowers, creating a heavenly atmosphere.

Amongst these awe-inspiring sights are the breathtaking views of Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna, and Hiunchuli. Eager to witness these vistas up close, we embark on a new and untouched trail along the ridge. After a challenging ascent, we reach the high camp. Continuing our ascent, we finally reach our coveted destination, the Mardi Base Camp, which offers a captivating and graceful panorama of the entire Annapurna range from its vantage point. This remarkable spectacle allows you to truly appreciate the grandeur of the mighty Himalayan range, with Annapurna towering right at your doorstep.

The best season for the Mardi Himal Trekking

The Mardi Himal trek is most enjoyable during autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May), as the optimal seasons for the trek. On the other hand, winter (December to February) and the rainy season (June to August) are considered off-season for the Mardi Himal Trek. Winter brings heavy snowfall, poor visibility, and extremely cold temperatures, which may result in a less-than-ideal experience, although it is still possible to do the trek if you can handle the cold. Similarly, the rainy season makes the trail slippery and wet due to heavy rainfall, impacting visibility and making the trek unpleasant. Fall is widely regarded as the best season for the Mardi Himal trek, offering pleasant weather, excellent visibility, and stable temperatures. Spring is the second most popular season, providing stable temperatures, pleasant weather, and the chance to see blooming flowers and hear birds chirping during your trek.

How Difficult is Mardi Himal Trekking?

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderately challenging trek that is situated in a stunningly beautiful location. This trek has been gaining popularity due to its incredible beauty. It typically lasts between 5 to 10 days, making it suitable even for those who are new to trekking. Many trekkers find it relatively easy as it involves staying in teahouses along the way. The trek is also shorter and does not lead to very difficult terrain, although beginners may still find it moderately challenging due to long walks and uphill climbs. Each day involves around 5 to 6 hours of walking in the foothills of Mardi Himal, but there are plenty of resting spots to make the journey more manageable. Despite the uphill climbs, the altitude is not usually a major issue as there are well-planned rest periods. The trek reaches an altitude of 4,500 meters, and when you finally reach the Mardi Himal viewpoint, the cold wind against your tired muscles will make you feel like the climb was worth it for the stunning mountain views. Overall, this trek is considered relatively easy compared to other mountain treks in Nepal.

FAQs

In the Annapurna Conservation Area, a newly opened gem called Mardi Himal awaits adventure enthusiasts. Its strategic location near Pokhara places it between two popular trekking routes, Ghorepani and Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

The Mardi Himal Trek covers a total distance of 40 km/25 mi, which typically takes 4-5 days to complete on foot. If you decide to combine it with another route such as Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp, you should allocate an additional 3-5 days according to the itinerary.

Mardi Himal Trek is generally regarded as a moderately challenging trek, with a maximum elevation of 3660m at High Camp. While reaching the final camp at Mardi is not too strenuous, the journey to Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500m can be tough for novice trekkers. The trail involves uphill sections off the beaten path, so physical fitness and good health are necessary.

The Poon Hill Trek route has gained global recognition as a serene and relatively short trek, attracting trekkers from all corners of the world. Additionally, this route offers well-established amenities and infrastructure to cater to the needs of adventurers. On the other hand, the Mardi Himal Trek, although newer and equally serene and remarkable, is less developed. The choice of which route to embark upon is entirely up to you, as both treks offer their own distinctiveness and gratification.

The trail poses a considerable risk due to its narrowness, particularly during winter when it becomes even more treacherous. Venturing beyond High Camp becomes highly perilous if the trail is covered in snow. However, if you choose to trek with a guide, your safety will be considerably higher compared to undertaking the journey alone. We kindly request that you ensure sufficient hydration by drinking at least 3/4 liters of water daily and maintain a slow walking pace. Additionally, it is advisable to allocate an acclimatization day for every 1000 meters of elevation gain.

The highest point you will reach on this trek is Mardi Himal Base Camp at an elevation of 4,500m/14763.78ft. If you opt for Mardi Himal Peak climbing, you will climb to a maximum altitude of 5,500 meters. Remember to drink plenty of water and advise your fellow trekkers to prioritize safety.

For those seeking a hassle-free and enjoyable experience, hiring a guide and porter for the Mardi Himal Trekking is highly recommended. While it is possible to undertake the trek without a guide, having their expertise and assistance ensures a more comfortable and secure journey. If you prefer to hire only a guide, please feel free to contact us.

The Mardi Himal trek is popular all year round, but certain seasons offer the most favorable weather conditions. For the best experience, consider visiting during Autumn (September to November) or Spring (March to May). These seasons provide stable and clear weather, with Spring being particularly breathtaking due to the vibrant rhododendron blooms that adorn the entire journey.

The Mardi Himal Trek is definitely a destination worth exploring. It provides a peaceful escape from the crowds, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature and local traditions. With stunning vistas of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchre, and Manaslu mountain ranges, this trek offers unparalleled beauty. In the spring, trekkers can witness the breathtaking rhododendron bloom and enjoy up-close views of the mountains.
