Situated in the lowlands of Nepal within the Chitwan District, it was founded in 1973 as the Royal Chitwan National Park and later designated as a World Heritage Site in 1984. Encompassing an expanse of 952.63 square kilometers (367.81 square miles), the park spans elevations ranging from 100 meters to 815 meters. Noteworthy inhabitants of Chitwan National Park include 68 mammal species, 544 bird species, 56 herpetofauna species, and 126 fish species. The park is particularly renowned for its conservation efforts towards the One-Horned Rhinoceros, Royal Bengal Tiger, and Gharial Crocodile. Chitwan National Park boasts a wealth of vegetation. Sal trees dominate the southern aspect of Churia Hill, interspersed with Chir Pine. On the northern slopes, Sal trees coexist with smaller tree and shrub species like Beleric, rosewood, axewood, elephant apple, grey downy balsam, and climbing plants such as Bauhinia vahilli and Spatholobus.

Approximately 20% of the park's area is covered by Terai-Duar Savanna and grasslands, hosting over 50 species, including towering grasses like Saccharum Ravennae (elephant grass), giant cane, Khagra reed, and various true grass species.
