People of Tsum Valley

People living in the Tsum Valley are known as the Tsumbas. These people follow traditional Tibetan Buddhists culture and religion. These people have their own language and traditions. Originally, these people used to live in Tibet but they fled the country and nestled in the valleys of the region. They fled to avoid war and famine. Ultimately, these people settled in the valleys and became indigenous community of Nepal. There are numerous monasteries and chortens inside the villages of Manaslu region of Nepal. These monasteries and chortens represent the cultural and religious heritages of the Tsumbas people.

Lokpa Village (2240 m)

The village of Lokpa is at the entry point of the Tsum Valley from the mainland Manaslu region. Trekkers trek through Budi Gandaki River and Philim Village to reach the Lokpa Village from Jagat. It is so fascinating to spend time in the village as trekkers can get the splendid scenery of Mt. Manaslu for the first time in this trekking trip. The sight of Buddha Himal and Himal Chuli is one of the most mesmerizing sceneries to savor while exploring or trekking to the village. There are many Gurung, Magar, and Tsumba people living in this village. The major highlight of this village is the authentic rural village environment and terraced farmlands.

Chumling (Low Altitude Tsum Village)

The trail from Lokpa to Chumling is one of the challenging sections in the Tsum Valley Trekking trip. There are many steep climbing sections with stone paved trails. There are many small settlements of different ethnic people on the way to Chumling. The famous monasteries like Panago Gompa and Gurwa Gompa make your stay in the village spiritual. These monasteries were built about 500 years ago and offer great insights into traditional Tibetan heritages.

Chhokang Paro (High Altitude Tsum Village)

Get the best view of Ganesh Himal from the Chhokang Paro village. At an altitude of 3031 m from sea level, the village is mainly inhabited by the Tsum community people and minority of the Tamang and Gurung communities. There are many houses in the village, including lots of chortens and pagodas. The village is one of the major villages including Chumling and Nile, in the trekking route of Tsum Valley Trekking.

Nile Village (Core Tsum Village)

The Nile Village is the core Tsumba’s village. No other ethnic communities are living in the village besides the indigenous Tsumbas. You will finally feel as if you are in one of the Tibetan villages. The major highlight of this village is the presence of Rachen Gompa. This is the major monastery in the Manaslu region of Nepal alongside Pungyen and Mu Gompa. Interestingly, this is also the village from where you can trek to Ganesh Himal Base Camp. At an altitude of 3361 m from sea level, the village is also the trailhead for Mu Gompa Monastery hike.

Mu Gompa Monastery

The Mu Gompa Monastery is believed to have been built by Padmasambha himself and Guru Rimpoche meditated in this place. Therefore, Tibetan Tsumbas people regard this monastery as their core pillar. There are nuns and monks in the monastery. There is no human settlement around the monastery as the daily needs’ supplies are transported from the Nile village.
