All you need to know about Nepal’s new solo-trekking ban

The Nepal Government and Tourism Board have introduced new regulations for trekking to improve safety and promote sustainable adventure tourism in Nepal. Previously, trekkers would trek on their own, leading to unsafe travel conditions such as getting lost, encountering illnesses, and facing challenges related to high altitudes. To address this issue, the new rules require every trekker and adventure enthusiast to use the services of a local travel company, as well as hire a guide and porter for their safety and convenience. Additionally, this initiative supports the local economy by aiding local entrepreneurs, trekking guides, and porters. Ultimately, these measures aim to promote sustainable trekking tourism in Nepal.

Individual trekkers are not permitted in Nepal's National Parks and Conservation Areas starting from April 1, 2023.

The Nepal Tourism Board, responsible for promoting tourism in the country, announced on March 3rd, 2023. After consulting with key players in the tourism industry, the board decided to ban individual trekkers from April 1st, 2023. According to Mani R. Lamichhane, the director of the board, the ban aims to improve the safety of trekking in Nepal and create more job opportunities within the nation.

Why have the new rules been imposed?

The Nepal Tourism Board has conducted research to improve the safety and quality of tourism in the country and to establish it as a leading adventure destination worldwide. Based on their findings, it is necessary to implement new regulations for the following reasons:

Safety:

There have been numerous reports of loss and disappearance, especially among solo travelers in high elevations, mainly due to difficulties in navigation and getting disoriented by heavy snowfall and other factors. The Nepal Tourist Board conducted an investigation and confirmed the prevalence of such cases. To address these issues and ensure the safety of visitors engaging in exciting adventures in Nepal, the government has introduced new regulations that provide significant benefits to every traveler. Having a guide accompanying you will greatly assist in mitigating these losses. These new rules have been implemented by the Nepalese government to establish Nepal as the leading and safest adventure destination worldwide.

Improve the Economy with Tourism

When traveling with a local guide and company, clients can enjoy several benefits while also supporting the local community. By choosing to journey with locals, you contribute to creating more job opportunities. Nepal is known for being a budget-friendly destination, so you need not worry about high guide fees as they are minimal compared to the Western world. Following the itinerary and walking as planned not only ensures a smooth experience for tourists but also provides significant support to local tea houses. This support plays a pivotal role in ensuring the longevity of the trekking industry.

Destinations where you can still travel solo

Nepal does not impose a ban on individual trekkers, but there are regulations in place for high-elevation treks to ensure safety and promote sustainable adventure tourism.
