It is part of the Mustang District within Gandaki Province and sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Due to its geographical isolation and high-altitude desert terrain, the region has preserved a unique Tibetan Buddhist culture and medieval settlement patterns. The area was closed to foreigners until 1992, which helped maintain its authenticity. Today, access is still regulated, making it one of Nepal’s most exclusive travel destinations.
