Catastrophic Flood in Bhotekosi, Trishuli River:
On August 26, 2026, at approximately 9:00 am, a catastrophic flood surged into Nepal from the Nepal-Tibet border, triggered by an avalanche and glacier slide. This disaster swept away cities, agriculture, hydropower, and all construction along the riverbed, devastating numerous riverbed towns including the ports of both countries, Timure, Ghate, and Sypru Beshi in Rasuwa district, as well as villages in Nuwakot district such as Bidur, Betrawoti, Trishuli, and Devighat. It also affected several villages in Dhading district, including Galchhi, Malekhu, Benighat, and Gajuri. The flood destroyed road connections and washed away 19 motorable bridges between Dhading and Rasuwa, including Nuwakot. Many schools and homes suffered extensive damage, resulting in a significant number of casualties, including deaths and injuries. This event stands as one of the most devastating natural disasters we have faced. On behalf of Himalayan Trekking Path Pvt. Trekking Route Update: Langtang Region
We wish to share a significant update concerning the trekking routes in the Langtang region. Currently, the Langtang Valley Trek that begins in Syabrubesi is impacted, and the overland route to Tibet through Kyirong (Kerung) is also affected. Travelers may encounter challenges due to road and access conditions, so it is advisable to make necessary arrangements and verify the latest information before planning your trip. Nevertheless, the Langtang Valley Trek via Dhunche and the route from Helambu through Gosaikunda are still viable. We particularly suggest that travelers consider the Helambu–Gosaikunda–Langtang Valley route, which offers an alternative way to access the Langtang region and can be undertaken when conditions permit. If you intend to travel via Dhunche, we kindly advise checking the current road access and transportation conditions prior to your journey. Road conditions can change rapidly, making it essential to confirm that the route is open before you set off. We appreciate your understanding and urge all travelers to prioritize safety while staying updated on the latest local conditions. Important Travel & Trekking Update – Nepal
The recent flooding has mainly affected regions along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli riverbanks, disrupting access to the Langtang Valley Trek and Tamang Heritage Trek via Dhunche. Travelers intending to embark on these routes should verify the latest local conditions prior to their departure. Nevertheless, other prominent trekking locations, such as Annapurna, Manaslu, Everest, Upper Mustang, and Kanchenjunga, are still safe and open to trekkers. These areas continue to welcome adventurers, although it is essential for travelers to remain updated on current weather and trail conditions. For those intending to travel by road between Kathmandu and Pokhara, we highly advise delaying your travel plans until official updates are released by the Nepal Government. Road-clearing and restoration efforts are currently in progress, and we expect that road travel may become feasible from August 29, 2026, contingent on the advancement of the clearance operations and overall safety conditions. Even after the roads are reopened, we suggest waiting a few extra days before traveling to allow conditions to stabilize and ensure safer transportation. If you are considering trekking in the Langtang region, we advise opting for an alternative route until the affected areas are completely accessible and secure.
